“Prior to the Buccaneers visit, the London Warriors ran 1 day football camp for 75 children. This helped to kick start a real buzz around the school about American Football. The Buccaneer players were brilliant and their presence further helped to fuel the American Football interest in our school” Jo Mullard, PE teacher)
The Tampa Buccaneer's visit to Harris South Norwood, prior to the NFL game at Wembley in October 2011 led to approximately 200 children, both boys and girls, being put through their paces by Buccaneer players.
This was followed by the London Warriors running a 5 week curriculum program and the recent 3 day mini-camp.
The participants were put through their paces, learning all the positions and skills associated American Flag Football; a non-contact version of the game, before being broken down into 6 teams. Coaching themselves, they were given the opportunity to formulate and practice their own plays before using those plays to good effect within an all-day tournament, rounding off the 3 days.
So impressed were the teachers with the positive affects the camp had on their students, they are now looking to organize another 3 day camp to include some kitted sessions for the 14+ age group, to introduce them to full contact American Football.
The London Warriors American Football Program is based at Selhurst AstroTurf, and caters for boys and girls from aged 8 upwards. From non-contact flag football, to full contact American Football, the London Warriors provides experienced coaches to deliver in a fun but safe teaching environment.
“It’s great to see how not only the children but also the P.E Teachers from Harris, South Norwood have really embraced American football, leading to several of their pupils becoming members of the Warriors and the teachers interested in getting involved in coaching American Football. Who knows, I’d like to think it could be the start of a Harris Academy interschool league”. (Gerry Anderson)
